The Cleveland Cavaliers have been going through a funk the last few years, but always seem to find a way around it and end up in the NBA Finals regardless. This year could be different as the defense is giving up points at an alarming rate. The Cavaliers will try and clamp down when they visit the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. Cleveland has dropped nine of their last 12 games and were blasted 148-124 by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday. The 148 points allowed matched the worst in franchise history in a regulation game. Cleveland has lost by margins of 34, 28 and 24 over the past six games and the defensive effort against Oklahoma City was the worst of the bunch as the Thunder scored at least 33 points in every quarter. “It’s embarrassing. It’s not acceptable,” point guard Isaiah Thomas told reporters. The Spurs own the best home record in the NBA at 19-3 but their 14-game winning streak at AT&T Center came to an end on Sunday with a 94-86 loss to the Indiana Pacers. The Spurs won both of last season’s meetings, including a 103-74 blowout at home.

Superstar forward LeBron James should reach another milestone on Tuesday against the Spurs, needing just seven points to become the seventh player in NBA history to reach 30,000 in his career. James is not worried about any personal achievements right now with his team in suck a funk, and knows they need to get better soon. “Playoffs? We can’t even start thinking about that, not the way we’re playing right now,” James told reporters. “We could easily get bounced early in the playoffs if they started next weekend. Haven’t even began thinking about the postseason.” Cleveland is dead last in all major defensive categories since the middle of December. Center Kevin Love (illness) is expected to play after leaving after three minutes against the Thunder.

The Spurs won and covered both meetings last season.

San Antonio also hasn’t played as well this season, but they have a good excuse with star forward Kawhi Leonard only playing nine games due to a quadriceps injury that is reportedly causing issues between Leonard and the organization. Coach Gregg Popovich decided to shake things up on Sunday by moving veteran point guard Tony Parker to the bench and starting Dejounte Murray, who had eight points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes. The Spurs are still firmly in the top four of the Western Conference, three games clear of fifth place Oklahoma City and four back of Houston in the Southwest Division.

NBA SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS

I’m not touching the Cavaliers right now until their defense shows vast improvement. The Spurs have their own issues, but they are solid at home despite Sunday’s setback to Indiana. San Antonio’s defense is still No. 1 in the league (97.5) and they should be able to score 100+ in this one.
