Don’t look now, but the St. Louis Cardinals are only a game out of first place in the crowded National League Central after taking yet another game in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Cardinals improved to 4-0 against the Pirates at PNC Park after yesterday’s 4-3 win and have now won nine of their last 11 games including four of them by one run. Paul Goldschmidt was the hero once again with his second homer of the series – grand slam in the 10th inning Monday and two-run shot Tuesday. Jose Martinez broke out of a prolonged 2-for-22 skid by collecting two hits including a solo home run. The win also kept St. Louis in the second wild card spot, a half-game behind Washington and a half-game ahead of Philadelphia. The Pirates now have the second-worst record in the National League after going 2-9 mark since the All-Star break and are seven games out of a wild card. Starling Marte is doing his best, going 8-for-17 over the last four games after accounting for all the Pirates runs Tuesday with a three-run homer. Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright will oppose Jordan Lyles in the third game of the four-game set on Wednesday night.

Wainwright is coming off his worst outing – and shortest – of the season after allowing seven runs in just 3.1 innings in St. Louis’ wild 12-11 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He threw seven scoreless innings versus Arizona in his previous start, allowing just four hits while striking out seven. Wainwright has a 4.34 ERA in 39 appearances against the Pirates including seven solid innings on May 10th (one run, eight Ks).

Lyles followed a poor outing July 13th against the Cubs with a 6-1 win over the Phillies in which he allowed just one run over 5.2 innings. Chicago tagged him for seven runs while recording just two outs in his previous start on the road. Lyles’ teams (San Diego, Colorado, Houston) lost his previous four starts against the Cardinals, but in his first start against them as a Pirate, he limited them to a run over six innings on May 11th in the 2-1 win.
These teams are obviously heading in different directions and the Cardinals ability to win the close games lately is giving them a lot of confidence. The Pirates have lost each of Lyles’ last seven starts and could be in for another rough outing Wednesday.
