Did the St. Louis Cardinals use up all of their offense in taking down the Atlanta Braves in Game 5 last Wednesday? It sure does seem so. After the Cardinals scored a postseason-record 10 runs in the first inning en route to building a 13-0 lead after three innings in the clinching NLDS game, the bats have gone ice cold. They now have a huge task ahead of them after losing the first two games of the National League Championship Series at home, and will travel to the Nation’s Capital for Games 3 and 4 against the Washington Nationals starting Monday. The first two Nationals pitchers – Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer – took no-hitters into the eighth and seventh innings respectively and Washington scored just enough runs to earn a 2-0 series lead. The Cardinals managed a total of four hits in the first two games while being outscored 5-1 and will counter with Jack Flaherty as they try to climb back into the series in a must-win Game 3. Only three teams in MLB history have come back from a 2-0 series deficit after dropping the first two at home. Washington will counter with red-hot righty Stephen Strasburg in what should be a raucous Nationals Park.
Pitchers: Cardinals – Jack Flaherty (1-1, 2.77 ERA) | Nationals – Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 2.40)
Flaherty has been the best pitcher on this Cardinals staff, especially after the All-Star Break where’s he allowed three runs or less in all 17 starts since including nine scoreless outings. He allowed three runs over seven innings in losing 3-0 to the Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS but was the pitcher of record in the 13-1 drubbing in Game 5. He’s only made one start in his career against Washington and allowed one run, three hits, and five walks back in September of 2018.
Strasburg has been asked and answered whenever needed this postseason including a dominant three-inning stint out of the bullpen to help Washington beat Milwaukee in the Wild Card game. He then beat the Dodgers with a one-run effort over six innings with 10 strikeouts and received a no-decision in the clinching Game 5 win. He was solid this season in two starts versus the Cardinals, allowing three runs over 11.2 innings with 15 strikeouts.
The Cardinals are really struggling and they’re going up against what I believe is Washington’s best pitcher right now. I know the Nationals haven’t hit much either, but I think they’ll get the bats going now that they’re at home.
