The red-hot Chicago Cubs have a chance to not only sweep their bitter rivals – the St. Louis Cardinals – on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, but they can also claim first place in the NL Central with a victory. The Cubs have taken the first two games of their three-game series including Saturday’s come-from-behind 6-5 victory to move within a half-game of St. Louis atop the division. With their sixth-straight win, the Cubs are now 18-12 after starting the season 3-8, while the Cardinals have lost three in a row for the first time this season. St. Louis led 5-1 on Saturday before Chicago’s Taylor Davis hit a grand slam and Javier Baez smashed a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. Cubs’ shortstop Javier Baez went 2-for-4 with his 11th home run on Saturday and has multiple hits in half of the team’s first 30 games. The Cardinals have had trouble winning close games, as five of their 13 losses have been by one run.

Adam Wainwright has allowed two earned runs or less in four of his six starts in 2019 including his latest effort against Washington. The veteran righty surrendered a pair of solo homers Tuesday versus the Nationals in 6.1 innings of work to pick up his third victory. He is 15-10 with a 4.01 ERA in 45 career games (36 starts) against the Cubs, but even better at Wrigley, going 11-3 with a 3.78 ERA in 25 games (20 starts).

After getting bombed at Milwaukee in his first outing of the season, Jose Quintana has pitched well enough for the Cubs to win each of his last four starts including a 6-5 at Arizona last Sunday. The lefty allowed three runs over 5.2 innings and recorded only two strikeouts after totaling 25 in his previous three starts. Quintana is 4-3 with a 3.86 ERA in eight career starts against St. Louis.
I’m buying into the Cubs right now. Their pitching is finally coming around after a disastrous start and their bullpen boasts a 2.09 ERA in the last 10 games. They’re also getting timely hits and are on a roll against their rivals, taking five of the last six from the Cardinals.
