St Louis (0-1) at Milwaukee (1-0)
When: Friday, March 29th, 2019
Where: Miller Park,
Milwaukee, WI
Time: 8:10 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: Milwaukee -126/8.5
The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers are expected to be two teams who will be battling the Chicago Cubs for NL Central supremacy this season and the first of 10 meetings over the next month was one of the better games of Opening Day. The Brewers hung on for a dramatic 5-4 win thanks to a game-saving, over the wall grab by Lorenzo Cain to record the final out and get Milwaukee a leg up on the season series. The teams will resume their four-game series on Friday night when St. Louis’ Jack Flaherty opposes Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta in a battle of good young arms. 2018 NL Most Valuable Player Christian Yelich picked up right were he left off last season by belting a three-run homer for the Brewers, who have now beaten the Cardinals five straight times. Six-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, who came over from Arizona in the offseason, went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk in his Cardinals debut. Kolten Wong homered twice, while Harrison Bader also went deep, but the top five batters in the St. Louis lineup went a combined 1-for-19 with eight strikeouts.
Pitchers: Cardinals – Jack Flaherty (8-9, 3.34 ERA) | Brewers – Freddy Peralta (6-4, 4.25)
Flaherty is one of the top rising pitchers in the league and posted a 3.34 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 10.85 strikeouts per nine innings. The tall right-hander went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts against the Brewers in 2018 including striking out nine in five innings of one-run ball in his 2018 debut and punching out 13 while allowing one hit in a dominant performance in June at Miller Park.
Peralta is also a rising star and had one heck of a debut last season, becoming the fifth pitcher in 100 years to strike out at least 13 batters. Peralta ended the season with an impressive 11.03 strikeout rate per nine innings and struck out six in a three-inning relief appearance in the postseason. Peralta gave up four runs in 9.2 innings in two appearances against St. Louis last season.
I love this Flaherty guy for St. Louis and I think he’s going to be an elite starter very soon. I’m riding him early and often this year and that starts with this game against the Brewers.
Pick: Cardinals -103
