The Milwaukee Brewers exploded for 11 runs on Thursday and inched another half-game closer to the idle Chicago Cubs in the National League Central with a convincing win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The two teams will continue their four-game series at PNC Park Friday when Milwaukee sends Jhoulys Chacin to the mound to face Pittsburgh’s Chris Archer. The Brewers pounded out 18 hits in the 11-5 win Thursday the middle of the order (Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal going a combined 11-for-18 with three homers and nine RBI. Both Moustakas and Grandal collected four hits and the latter is batting.348 with six homers and 14 RBIs over his last 14 games. The win places Milwaukee one-half game behind the Cubs in the division while dropping the sliding Pirates below .500 and 4.5 games out of first place. Pittsburgh’s pitching has been bad lately, allowing 10 runs or more four times in their last eight games while going just 2-6 in that stretch. Pittsburgh is 1-7 over its last eight home games but 14-7 against Milwaukee at PNC Park since the start of the 2017 season. Josh Bell is having a terrific May and needs just one more extra-base hit to tie Paul Waner’s club record (24) for most in a single month.
Pitchers: Brewers – Jhoulys Chacin (3-6, 4.88 ERA) | Pirates – Chris Archer (1-5, 5.75)
Chacin will be glad to see the month of June after going through a terrible May, but still needs to get through one more start. He is 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in four May starts after allowing four runs over five innings in a loss to Philadelphia last Saturday. Chacin has been even worse on the road where he is 1-5 with 5.90 ERA. He went 0-3 despite a 3.03 ERA in six starts against the Pirates in 2018.

Archer has actually been worse than Chacin lately, posting an 8.74 ERA over his last five starts – all losses – and all of those outings were against the National League West. He’s coming off an 11-7 loss to the L.A. Dodgers last Sunday in which he gave up four runs on six hits and six walks in five innings. Archer is 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA in three career starts against Milwaukee – two of those as a member of the Pirates.
Neither pitcher has been good lately – and that’s being kind – but at least Chacin has a decent track record against the Pirates. Archer was bombed in both starts against Milwaukee last season and I don’t see any signs of him turning things around tonight.
