Opening Odds: Washington -150/9.5

The National League Wild Card contenders will go head-to-head this weekend in the Nation’s Capital as the Washington Nationals host the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night. That Nationals will begin the weekend with a one-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for the top wild card spot, while the Brewers sit 1.5 games back, but are also just 1.5 back of first place in the NL Central. Washington, who is 2.5 games clear of Milwaukee, is currently on a four-game winning streak after a rough series last weekend against the New York Mets. The Nationals’ offense busted-out with a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds earlier this week including a 17-7 route on Wednesday. The offense has received a nice boost from Asdrubal Cabrera, who is 8-for-21 with four doubles and five RBI in six games since joining the team. Milwaukee is beginning a stretch Friday in which it will play six of seven series against contending National League teams and are winners of six of their last eight games. The Brewers swept the Nationals in Milwaukee in early May, outscoring them 18-6 in the three games.

Pitchers: Brewers – Adrian Houser (5-5, 4.00 ERA) | National – Patrick Corbin (9-5, 3.41)

Adrian Houser has made three straight starts since his last relief appearance on July 26th and his pitch count has increased each time. He threw 96 pitches last time out over six innings in a 3-2 win over Texas. Houser allowed just three hits and one run while striking out 10. He went two scoreless innings in a start against Washington on May 7th and struck out four.

The Nationals are 1-4 in Corbin’s last five starts but the offense has scored three runs or less in each of those contests. Corbin bounced back from a rough outing against the Cubs on August 4th to limit the New York Mets to two runs on three hits while striking out eight in six innings. The lefty is 2-5 with a 5.18 ERA in eight career games (seven starts) against Milwaukee.

The pitching matchup heavily favors Washington in this one and their offense hammered a pretty good Reds staff. Milwaukee is hitting just .242 against lefties this season including .225 in their last 10 games.
