The Milwaukee Brewers have not let the injury to star player Christian Yelich get them down as they surge toward a postseason berth in the National League. The red-hot Brewers look to make it eight wins in a row when they begin a three-game set at the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Milwaukee has catapulted themselves into a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card spot and are just four games behind the first-place Cardinals, who have won nine of the 16 meetings thus far against the Brewers. St. Louis is going to be hard to catch and are on a great run of their own, winning 24-of-33 after a 10-3 win over Colorado on Thursday to complete a 2-3 road trip. Kolten Wong homered on Thursday and has terrorized the Brewers this season to the tune of 21-for-50 with three homers, 13 RBI and nine runs scored. Cardinals outfielder Marcell Ozuna has homered four times this season against Milwaukee and hit his 27th of the season on Thursday.
Pitchers: Brewers – Adrian Houser (6-5, 3.59 ERA) | Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (11-9, 4.16)
Houser has allowed one run or less in five of his last eight starts but the Brewers are just 3-5 in that span because they haven’t give him a lot of run support. Houser surrendered three run in four innings of a no-decision versus the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and will be making his first road start since August 21st. This will be his fourth start against the Brewers this season and allowed one run over five innings in his latest outing versus them on August 27th.
Wainwright has allowed just one run total in his last two outings covering 14 innings in wins over San Francisco and Pittsburgh. The Cardinals are 4-1 in his last five starts with the lone loss coming at Milwaukee when he allowed five runs on eight hits in a 5-3 setback. Wainwright is 7-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 13 starts at Busch Stadium this season.
The Brewers are on fire right now, but Wainwright seems to be in postseason form after his last two outings and should be able to cool off this Milwaukee team. St. Louis had a rough road trip but they’re 46-26 at home and have won eight of the last 10 meetings.
