With the end of July coming up, the National League East race is still wide open and the top two teams will begin a pivotal series starting Monday night as the first place Atlanta Braves visit the Washington Nationals. Atlanta and Washington have been two of the hottest teams going since the end of May with the Nationals closing the gap with an impressive 37-18 run despite losing two of three over the weekend to the MLB-best Los Angeles Dodgers. Stephen Strasburg halted the team’s three-game losing streak with a solid performance and the offense erupted for an 11-4 triumph. The bad news was that first baseman Matt Adams – who hit .300 with three homers and seven RBI in his last eight starts – left after he was hit by a pitch on his foot and will another X-ray on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. Third baseman Anthony Rendon went 3-for-4 with three RBI to increase his average to .368 in the last 18 contests. The Braves bombed the Phillies during the first two games over the weekend, but couldn’t complete the sweep with a 9-4 setback on Sunday. Center fielder Ender Inciarte homered for the second consecutive day and finished with two hits and three RBI, but outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. left the game with neck stiffness after a collision at second base after extending his on-base streak to 32 games. Washington leads the season series 5-4 after splitting a four-game set in Atlanta on July 18-21.

Pitchers: Braves – Dallas Keuchel (3-3, 3.50 ERA) | Nationals – Patrick Corbin (8-5, 3.25)

Dallas Keuchel has settled into Atlanta very nicely since being acquired in June to bolster the pitching staff. He’s allowed three earned runs or less in five of his seven starts with the Braves including a 12 strikeout performance against Kansas City last time out. That was a nice bounce back from his previous outing when he allowed a season-high five runs – four earned – at Milwaukee. Keuchel made his Atlanta debut at Washington on June 21st and gave up four runs – three earned – over five innings.

The Nationals are 6-1 in Patrick Corbin’s last seven starts and in that span, he’s allowed three runs once, and two runs or less in all the others, leading to a 1.60 ERA during the run. He limited Colorado to three hits with seven strikeouts in six scoreless innings last time out to record his eighth win. Corbin gave up eight hits and two runs over five innings back on July 19th in the 4-3 loss at Atlanta.

The trend here is to take the under, and that’s exactly what I’ll do. Both of these lefties have been terrific over the last month-plus and ALL seven of Keuchel’s starts have gone under. Corbin has pitched against the Braves eight times in his career and has allowed more than two runs just once. This game – and series – will also have a playoff-type atmosphere which favors pitching.
