In what could be a preview of a playoff series come October, the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs kicked-off their four game series on Monday with a benches-clearing incident that will probably carry over into the week. Chicago catcher Willson Contreras homered in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday and looked back at Atlanta catcher Tyler Flowers before taking his home-run trot and and had some more words for him en route to crossing the plate. That home run sparked the Cubs to an 8-3 series-opening victory and kept them a game ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central, while Atlanta lost for just the fourth time in their last 17 games. Contreras’ homer was his 16th – five shy of the career high he set in 2017. Dansby Swanson smacked his career-best 15th homer in the setback, as Atlanta’s lead in the NL East shrunk to 5.5 games over second place Philadelphia. Atlanta will trot-out left-hander Max Fried to face Cubs’ rookie Adbert Alzolay in Tuesday’s contest.
Pitchers: Braves – Max Fried (8-3, 4.03 ERA) | Cubs – Adbert Alzolay (1-0, 2.25)
Fried had allowed three runs or more in four straight starts before earning the win last time out by surrendering just two over six innings of work against the New York Mets last Wednesday. Fried has allowed only one run over two starts against the Cubs covering 11 innings including a 9-4 win in Atlanta on April 4th in which he allowed just one hit.

Alzolay will make his first career start after one appearance out of the bullpen last Thursday against the Mets when he allowed just a solo home run over four innings of work, striking out five and walking two. He threw 55 pitches that outing and is expected to be stretched a bit more on Tuesday.
Alzolay was pretty impressive last Thursday, but starting a game for the first time, especially against this Atlanta lineup, is no easy task. Fried has already faced the Cubs twice and was very successful both times. Look for the Braves, who have the best road record in the National League, to bounce back and take Tuesday’s contest.
