The Denver Nuggets need to regroup fast as they have fallen out of the playoff picture for the moment and will get a chance to do just that when they continue their long homestand against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night. The Nuggets are in danger of falling below .500 for the first time since the opening month of the season, while the Blazers are trending in the other direction and will try for their first four-game winning streak of the season. Portland ended a 3-0 homestand with Saturday’s 117-108 win over Dallas, thanks to the sizzling shooting by Damian Lillard, who hit his first nine shots en route to 31 points. Lillard missed the previous meeting, a 102-85 win for the Nuggets in Portland on December 22nd, but the Blazers captured a 99-82 home win in November. The Nuggets dropped their sixth game in eight tries with a 108-100 loss against lowly Phoenix on Friday to begin a five-game homestand. Jamal Murray scored 30 points but Denver could not recover from a 10-point halftime deficit and fell to 11-3 at home against conference opponents.

Portland shot 52.3% against the Mavericks on Saturday and have made 50% of their shots or better in five of the last nine games. Lillard is averaging 26.8 points in six games since missing two due to a calf injury, and could be in line for an All-Star nomination. Lillard hasn’t made the All-Star game since the 2014-15 campaign despite two terrific seasons since. The Blazers received almost all of their points on Saturday from the starting five including 26 from shooting guard CJ McCollum, who rebounded from 6-of-18 shooting night against Indiana the previous game. McCollum has gone without a turnover in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Head coach Michael Malone was not happy with his team after scoring only 100 against the NBA’s worst defense (112.2). “I can’t coach effort,” Malone told the media. Murray’s 10-for-17 shooting performance was a big contrast from his previous three games when he went 5-for-23. Nikola Jokic, who averages 10.4 rebounds a game, pulled-down 17 against Phoenix and had 18 boards two games ago against Dallas. The Nuggets will get a couple of days off after Monday and will continue their homestand against New York on Thursday.
NBA SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS
Portland is a hard team to figure out, but when they’re going good, you have to jump on them. Same thing when they’re going bad. Lillard is back and healthy and McCollum is always dangerous.
