The mythical National Championship takes place tonight at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California between two undefeated teams. The Texas Longhorns will bring their potent offense to the field to take on defensive minded Alabama Crimson Tide. These teams are here because of computers and human opinion. Are these the best two teams in the country? Probably, but we’ll never know without a playoff. Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram will try and fight through a tough Texas run defense. I saw somewhere that 7 of the last 8 Heisman winners have lost their Bowl game. That’s pretty amazing. The Longhorns only allow 62 yards a game on the ground. That might be a tad misleading considering they play in the pass happy Big 12. Still, their defensive line is solid. Colt McCoy will try and finish off a great career with a win tonight. He’s completed over 70% of his passes this year for 3,512 yards and 27 touchdowns. His favorite target is Jordan Shipley who caught an amazing 106 passes this year for 1,363 yards. Ingram leads the Tide offense with 1,542 yards and 15 touchdowns. He’s also caught 30 passes for another 3 TD’s. Signal caller Greg McElroy has been very effective this year only throwing 4 interceptions in 314 pass attempts. I think both teams will struggle to find any offense early on. Alabama’s defense is stronger overall and will force turnovers. Texas is here only because of a last second FG against Nebraska, while Alabama crushed Florida in the SEC Championship game, and we all know what Florida did in their Bowl game this year.
Pick: Alabama -3.5
