The Minnesota Twins took the first two games over second place Cleveland right after the All-Star Break to build a 7.5-game lead in the AL Central, but things have tightened up since. Minnesota dropped their fourth game in its last five contests and the hard-charging Indians sit only three games behind the Central-leading Twins. Minnesota took the first game of a four-game weekend set with Oakland, but the A’s bounced-back with a 5-3 win on Friday to bolster their playoff positioning. Oakland has won 15 of their last 19 games to not only put them into the second AL Wild Card spot, but pull them within 5.5 games of AL West-leading Houston. Marcus Semien went 3-for-4 with a homer and Khris Davis drove in a pair of runs for Oakland, who also are one behind Cleveland for the first wild card spot. Semien has been on fire, recording multi-hit performances in five of his last eight games while Matt Olson extended his hitting streak to 14 games on Friday. The A’s pitching staff will soon get a boost, as former ace Sean Manaea (shoulder) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings in a rehab outing for Single-A Stockton on Thursday.
Pitchers: Athletics – Brett Anderson 9-5, 3.79 ERA) | Twins – Jose Berrios (8-5, 3.10)
Oakland is 6-1 in Brett Anderson’s last seven starts and he’s allowed three runs or less in all of those victories including a two-run outing against the Chicago White Sox last Sunday, but settled for a no-decision. The lefty pitches well on the road and at night, posting a 3.39 ERA away from home and 7-2 record with a 2.75 ERA under the lights. Anderson owns a 3-3 record and a 3.83 ERA in nine appearances (seven starts) against Minnesota.

While the A’s keep winning with Anderson on the hill, the Twins have lost five of Berrios’ last six starts after he surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings of a no-decision at Cleveland last time out. He hasn’t pitched terrible, allowing three runs or less in seven of his last eight outings, but is looking for his first win since June 6th. Berrios is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in three career starts against the Athletics including a loss on July 4th in Oakland.
I have to go with the hotter team and the hotter pitcher in this one. The A’s are a resilient team and once they get rolling, they’re hard to stop. Look for Berrios’ troubles against Oakland to continue.
