It was a long and brutal road trip once again for the Seattle Mariners, who have fallen off the pace in the American League West. They will try and right the ship in their return home on Monday when they open a two-game series with the Oakland Athletics. Seattle has lost 21 of their last 28 after a 13-2 start and are now seven games behind first place Houston. The Mariners, who went 2-7 on their road trip, were outscored over the weekend 34-8 in losing all three games to the Boston Red Sox after taking three of four from them in early April at home. Seattle still leads the majors with 78 home runs including 18 in their last 10 games, but are hitting just .243 as a team and have an ERA of 4.85. Omar Narvaez homered for the second straight day for Seattle and has recorded two hits and scored a run in each of his last three games. The Mariners will try and solve Mike Fiers, who is coming off his second career no-hitter last time out and the 300th in Major League history. The A’s followed-up that no-hitter by taking three of their next four, but dropped the series finale Sunday to Cleveland 5-3 and are 7.5 games back of Houston in the division. Matt Olson blasted his first homer of the season and Khris Davis singled twice in his return to the cleanup spot Sunday after missing three games with a bruised left hip.

Despite the no-hitter last time out, Fiers has had a rough season, posting a 5.48 ERA including 8.20 in four road starts. The 131 pitches he needed on Tuesday was the most in a no-hitter since Fiers himself needed 134 versus the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. He has allowed five or six runs on four occasions this season including five against Seattle in Japan on March 20th when the A’s lost 9-7. Fiers 2-2 with a 6.91 ERA in nine career starts versus the Mariners.

Yusei Kikuchi has comeback from a rough start to post two solid outings in a row, allowing two runs total over 14.2 innings including a 10-1 at the New York Yankees last time out. The win took a bit of a backseat when Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that cameras showed a dark substance smudged under the brim of Kikuchi’s cap. His only start against Oakland came in his native Japan on March 21st when he pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) in a no-decision.
I know Fiers is coming off a no-hitter, but that’s exactly why I’m taking the over in this game. More specifically, his 134 pitches really scare me and this Mariners team can still hit bombs despite their recent struggles. Kikuchi has pitched well lately, but the over has come in six times in his nine starts with one push. Seven of the last eight between these teams have gone over.
