The 2019 World Series will be heading back to Minute Maid Park on Tuesday for a Game 6 and the team that has the 3-2 series lead will be determined in Sunday night’s Game 5 from Washington, D.C. The Houston Astros exploded for an 8-1 victory over the Washington Nationals and saw one of their stars break out of a slump in a big way. Third baseman Alex Bregman came into Game 4 on a 1-for-13 skid, but gave Houston the lead with an RBI single in the first inning and put the game out of reach in the seventh, when he parked a Fernando Rodney pitch into the seats for a grand slam. The Nationals had won eight consecutive postseason contests before dropping Game 3 and had a streak of nine straight games in which they allowed four runs or fewer come to an end on Saturday. The team’s most glaring weakness all season was their bullpen, and it surrendered four runs on two hits and five walks in the seventh inning alone. The Nationals bats have gone cold since coming home, going 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position over the last two games. Washington will rely on Game 1 winner Max Scherzer to give his team the edge heading back to Houston. The Astros are trying to become the first team to drop the first two games at home and still win the series since the 1996 New York Yankees and will have Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander lined up for the next two games.
Pitchers: Astros – Gerrit Cole (3-1, 1.82 ERA) | Nationals – Max Scherzer (3-0, 2.16)
Cole’s first loss since May 22nd couldn’t have come at a worse time – Game 1 of the World Series. The Cy Young candidate allowed five runs and eight hits – two homers – and a walk while recording a postseason-low six strikeouts in seven innings. Cole had allowed a total of one run in 22.2 innings in the postseason prior to Game 1.
Scherzer allowed two runs and five hits while striking out seven, but needed 112 pitches to get through five laborus innings. So far this postseason, the former Cy Young Award winner has allowed a total of six runs over 25 innings while recording 34 strikeouts.
We are now down to a best-of-three World Series and I still think it’s anyone’s to win. Houston clearly has the momentum back on their side, but I’m not counting out the Nationals yet. They’ve already proved they can beat Cole and Scherzer will be up to the task here in Game 5.
