Things looked bleak for the New York Yankees a few weeks ago. New York was mired in a horrible stretch in which they lost 23-of-33 games and fell out of first place in the American League East. The Bronx Bombers are now back in first – tied with Baltimore – after going 7-1 since July 27. The Los Angeles Angels will come to town to begin a three-game set at Yankee Stadium beginning Wednesday afternoon.
The Halos are 12-9 in their past 21 games and are coming off a series win versus the New York Mets over the weekend. The Angels are expected to welcome Anthony Rendon back to the lineup Tuesday after he missed another week with lower back tightness. New York went to Anaheim back at the end of May and took the final two games of a three-game set, snapping the Angels four-game winning streak against New York.

Angels – Davis Daniel (1-2, 4.91)
Yankees – Luis Gil (11-5, 3.20)
Davis Daniel has started four games for the Angels with mixed results. The right-hander made his first career start on June 27 and shutout the Detroit Tigers over eight strong innings for the win. Then he got bombed by Oakland and Texas before settling down for a five-inning, one-run game against Colorado last week. The Angels are 1-3 in his four starts.
Gil struggled around the same time the entire Yankees’ squad were free falling. However, over his last four starts, Gil has surrendered exactly one earned run in three of those outings. He surrendered three runs in 5 1/3 innings in his latest outing, a 14-4 New York win at Philadelphia. That’s a far cry from his four starts between June 20 and July 7 when he was 0-4 with a 9.37 ERA. On May 29, Gil allowed one run on two hits with nine strikeouts in eight innings of a 2-1 road win against the Angels.
The Angels have been playing better ball lately, but that was against mostly the worst teams in the league. The Yankees are red-hot once again and Gil is back on his game. With a scorching Aaron Judge, the Yankees should easily get to Daniel and cruise to victory.
