Angels vs Yankees Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [5/26/18]

LA Angels (28-23) at NY Yankees (32-15)
When: Saturday, May 26th 2018
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Time: 7:15 ET | TV: FOX
Opening Odds: New York -120/8

The New York Yankees will seek to continue their dominance of the Los Angeles Angels when the two teams meet on Saturday night in the Bronx in the middle game of their weekend series. New York used a seventh inning home run from rookie Gleyber Torres to break a 1-1 tie as the Yankees held on for a 2-1 victory in the opener Friday. Torres became the youngest player in American League history to homer in four consecutive games as New York won for the 14th time in its last 16 at Yankee Stadium. Torres has nine RBIs during his four-game homer streak. The Yankees will get another big bat back in the lineup with first baseman Greg Bird expected to be activated off the disabled list Saturday to make his season debut. Despite Friday’s loss, the Angels are 16-6 away from home and have yet to lose a series away from Angel Stadium, but they have lost all four meetings to New York this season. Mike Trout provided the lone run Friday with his 16th home run, but has three home runs in 34 at bats against Sonny Gray, the Yankees’ scheduled starter Saturday. New York remains a game behind the Red Sox in the American League East standings, while the Angels are 5.5 back of Houston in the West.

Pitchers: Angels – Jaime Barria (3-1, 2.13 ERA) | Yankees – Sonny Gray (3-3, 5.48)

Rookie Jaime Barria will make his sixth start of the season once he’s recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Saturday’s start. He’s been a terrific spot starter for them, allowing two earned runs or less in all five outings including a solid seven-inning outing on May 15th against Houston in which he allowed just four this and one run in a no-decision. Barria has allowed a total of six runs over his five starts and surrendered one homer, that coming in his season debut. He is 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA in two road starts (Colorado and Texas).

Gray has been inconsistent all season, but is coming off his strongest outing of the season on Sunday, working a season-high eight innings and limiting Kansas City to one run and four hits. It was his second victory in three starts and third quality start in his last four after recording only one in his first five outings. Gray has made 14 appearances (13 starts) against Los Angeles, going 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA.

I like this underdog spot for the Angels here. I don’t trust Gray at all and a lot of these Angels hitters have seen him a lot from his time with Oakland, where he was much more effective. Barria looks like a pretty good pitcher and should be able to hold the Yankees down enough for his team to pick up another road victory.
