When: Wednesday, May 8th, 2019

Time: 7:10 ET | TV: FS West, FS Detroit
Opening Odds: Los Angeles -110/8.5
The Los Angeles Angels were on a bit of a roll – winning six of seven – before getting bombed in back-to-back games down in Mexico to the Houston Astros. L.A. got back on track Tuesday with a 5-2 win at the Detroit Tigers behind Andrelton Simmons and David Fletcher to move back to within three games of the .500 mark. The series in Mexico were technically home games, but that started a string of 11 straight games away from home for the Angels who received a pair of RBI singles from Simmons and two hits and an RBI from Fletcher. Simmons is now batting .365 in 14 career games in Detroit. Tuesday’s contest marked the season debut of Shohei Ohtani, who will DH exclusively while he still recovers from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The two-way star went hitless in four at-bats with a walk and two strikeouts, while leaving four men on base. The Tigers offense was held to five hits by four Angels pitchers in the series opener and Miguel Cabrera had two of those hits and is 14-for-35 with seven RBIs over his last eight games. Tigers shortstop Jordy Mercer is just 3-for-20 in six games since returning from a quadriceps injury. Lefties Tyler Skaggs and Matthew Boyd will be on the mound Wednesday.
Pitchers: Angels – Tyler Skaggs (3-2, 3.12 ERA) | Tigers – Matthew Boyd (3-2, 3.05)
Skaggs has been solid in his two starts since a stint on the IL, allowing just two earned runs over 11 innings with 10 strikeouts in victories over Kansas City and Toronto. Skaggs was bombed in his only start against Detroit last year, allowing five runs in five innings, but surrendered just one run total over 11.2 innings in his only other two starts against them.

Boyd has been solid in all six of his starts since getting knocked around in his season debut with the Tigers going 4-2 in those six outings. His latest strong effort came against Kansas City on Friday when he allowed two runs in seven innings, his sixth consecutive quality start. He struck out nine batters for the second straight game and has 57 total over 44.1 innings while holding opponents to a .205 average. Boyd shut out the Angels for five innings at Comerica Park last season before the Angels tagged him for four runs in 5.1 innings in Anaheim last August.
I really like both of these pitchers here. Five of Boyd’s seven starts have gone under while all five of Skaggs’ outings have also gone under. Both teams don’t hit lefties well, with the Angels hitting .203 against them overall and .162 on the road. Detroit is slightly better at .231 but only .095 while at home. Take the under.
