The Los Angeles Angels’ strong start and quest to get back into the postseason is a distant memory now. The team hit a really low point on Sunday when they struck out 20 times in a 4-2 loss at the Houston Astros on Sunday. The Angels now have to contend with the National League Pitcher of the Month when they open an interleague series with the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. L.A. is now seven games under .500 after getting swept over the weekend by the Astros. The Marlins are trending in the opposite direction after a four-game road sweep at the Washington Nationals. Miami’s strong pitching continues to keep this team within shouting distance of the wild card in the National League. They have allowed four runs or less in winning their last five games and are just four games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL wild card standings. These teams have faced each other just 17 times with the Angels holding an 11-6 edge.

Pitchers: Angels – Noah Syndergaard (5-6, 3.86) | Marlins – Sandy Alcantara (8-3, 1.95)
Syndergaard is coming off his first win since May 24 when he limited the Chicago White Sox to three runs over seven innings last Monday. The right-hander is no stranger to the Marlins, having faced them 12 times while with the New York Mets. Syndergaard boasts a 7-1 record and 2.16 ERA against Miami. He is 1-4 with an ugly 6.53 ERA away from home this season.
Alcantara is will on his way to starting the All-Star game and is the frontrunner for the NL Cy Young Award. He leads the majors in innings (115 1/3) and is third overall in ERA (1.95). In June, Alcantara went 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA in six starts and opponents hit just .199 off him. Alcantara is coming off a complete game win over the Cardinals last Wednesday.
I’m going with the hotter team here. It’s rare that you see the Marlins this big of a favorite, but Alcantara is worth the risk. The Angels are a mess right now and won’t get much going offensively against Alcantara.
