The Philadelphia 76ers are using the final weeks of the regular season to tune up their game for a big postseason run, but the Orlando Magic are doing all they can just to get in. Orlando looks to wrap-up a perfect five-game homestand on Monday after defeating non-playoff teams in the first four contests at Amway Center. The Magic sit just one game behind the Miami Heat for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and will play six of their final eight games after Monday on the road including a date in Miami tomorrow night. Philadelphia is closing in on locking up the No. 3 spot as they have a three-game cushion over the Indiana Pacers and four over Boston. The Atlanta Hawks snapped Philly’s six-game winning streak on Saturday with a 129-127 triumph. The 76ers took the most recent meeting 114-106 in Philadelphia back on March 5th, but the Magic won 111-106 in a November 14th contest in Orlando. The Sixers have won five of the last six meetings.
Like Orlando, Philadelphia will play the majority of its remaining games on the road beginning Monday, but will play only one team that’s heading to the playoffs (Milwaukee). With All-Star center Joel Embiid back and healthy, the Sixers offense has picked it up, scoring at least 118 points in five straight games and look to improve on their 18-17 road record. Embiid scored 27 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added 12 rebounds versus Atlanta on Saturday, while all five starters scored 13 or more points. Shooting guard Jimmy Butler, who averages 19.4 points on the season, has eclipsed 22 points in five straight games. Philly will host the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday.
Orlando’s fourth straight victory was not an easy one, as they trailed by 14 points entering the final quarter before forcing overtime with a big rally. Terrance Ross came off the bench to come within one point of his season-high, pouring in 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting including 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. Shooting guard Evan Fournier (14.8 points) logged over 39 minutes to get his 27 points and is averaging 24.5 over the last two games. Orlando’s game in Miami Tuesday begins a four-game road trip that also takes them to Indiana and Toronto.
The Sixers are cruising right now – outside of the loss in Atlanta – and are far more superior than the Magic. I know they’re not the best road team in the league, but they only have to win this game by a few points.
