The NY Mets have five home games remaining. They have two gamesagainst the Washington Nationals and then a three game seriesagainst the Florida Marlins. In recent meetings between theMets and Nationals the Mets are 9-7, which is pretty even betweenthese two teams. But when the Mets are at home the Nationalsare ahead 4-3. When the Mets face the Marlins they’re10-6 and when they play them at home the Mets are 2-3. TheyMets are going to have to tighten up and play some serious ballin the next few days if they want top billing in the NL East. The Mets are 4-6 in their last ten games.
The Philadelphia Phillies have six home games remaining. Theyplay three games against the Atlanta Braves and then a threegame series against the Washington Nationals. In recent meetingsbetween the Phillies and Braves the Phillies lead 5-4 but whenthe Mets play against them at home they’re 2-4. The Philliesmay have the edge over the Mets because the Phillies are 8-2in their last ten games and are burning up the bases right now.
It’s lining up to look like the Washington Nationals canbe the big spoiler in the race for 1st place in the NL East. The Nationals remaining five games are against the Mets andPhillies. Can you see the connection here? In recent meetingsbetween the Phillies and Nationals, the Nationals lead 4-9 butwhen playing in Philadelphia they are 2-4. When the Nationalsand Mets play they’re 8-8 but when they’re at SheaStadium the Nationals lead 4-3.
The NL East is gearing up to be the most exciting division. It’s getting to close to call, and unless you’rea mathematician who can predict all the possible scenarios, you’re going to have to stay tuned to the NL East.
