Yankees vs Mets Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [6/10/18]

NY Yankees (42-18) at NY Mets (27-34)
When: Sunday, June 10th 2018
Where: Citi Field, New York, NY
Time: 8:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: NY Yankees -235/7

Things just keep getting worse for the New York Mets and now they need to snap a long losing skid to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands for their cross-town rivals – the New York Yankees. The teams will meet in the finale of their Subway Series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball from Citi Field. The Yanks rallied from an early three-run deficit on Saturday to edge the Mets 4-3 for their fourth straight win and ninth in 10 games to stay a half-game ahead of Boston in the AL East. The Baby Bombers used the long ball to battle back, hitting three homers to account for all four runs including a tie-breaking solo shot in the eighth inning by Aaron Judge, who was in the lineup after X-rays on his sore left thumb came back negative. The Mets recorded six hits on Saturday, but half of them came in the first inning that featured homers by former Yankee Todd Frazier and Asdrubal Cabrera. The Mets have dropped eight consecutive games including all seven this month, scoring fewer than two runs in six of those. The Mets are close to getting OF Yoenis Cespedes (hip) back, as he played the second game of his rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Saturday, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar blasted a two-run shot on Saturday, giving him three homers and 10 RBIs in seven games this month.

Pitchers: Yankees – Luis Severino (9-1, 2.20 ERA) | Mets – Seth Lugo (1-1, 2.04)

Severino will be seeking to win his eighth consecutive decision after allowing two runs – one earned – and four hits while recording 10 strikeouts over eight innings at Detroit on Monday. Severino has made 10 starts since suffering his only loss of the season at Boston on April 10th, allowing fewer than three runs eight times in that span and three in each of the other two. He has made one start and one relief appearance against the Mets in his career, recording 14 strikeouts while giving up two unearned runs and five hits over 10.2 innings.

The Mets were supposed to counter the Yankees’ ace with Noah Syndergaard, but he’ll be unable to pitch due to swelling in his injured right index finger. Instead, Seth Lugo will make his second start of the season after working four scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs on May 31st, allowing three hits while striking out three batters. Lugo made his only career appearance against the Yankees in relief in August of 2016, when he took the loss after giving up one run on one hit and one walk in one inning.

I like taking underdogs, but there’s no logical reason to take the Mets in this contest. They are on a downward spiral that seems to be getting worse. I don’t see the Yankees having any trouble covering the runline in this one with their ace on the hill.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 -144
