The New York Yankees’ new ace will take the mound on Thursday night at Progressive Field to take on the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a huge four-game series. Gray, who was acquired from the Oakland A’s on Monday, will slot into a temporary six-man rotation for New York, which is coming off a 2-0 loss to Detroit on Wednesday. The loss took nearly eight hours to complete due to a few rain delays and dropped the Yankees back into second place behind Boston in the AL East. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is mired in a big slump over the last few weeks, hitting just 1.64 since the All-Star Break and striking out in a franchise-record 21 consecutive games. The Indians, who lead the AL Central by 2.5 games, have dropped three in a row following a nine-game winning streak. Their game on Wednesday in Boston was rained-out, but gives the Tribe a chance to shuffle their rotation and have ace Corey Kluber the start in the series opener. Cleveland placed dominant reliever Andrew Miller (knee) on the 10-day disabled list and announced that starter Josh Tomlin could miss six weeks with a left hamstring tendon strain. Tomlin, who has a 5.38 ERA on the season, was starting to turn things around over his last few starts. Second baseman Francisco Lindor is riding a hot bat, hitting .380 during a 12-game hitting streak. New York is 20-11 in its last 31 games at Progressive Field.

Pitchers: Yankees – Sonny Gray (6-5, 3.43 ERA) | Indians – Corey Kluber (8-3, 2.90)

Gray finished his tenure in Oakland with six straight quality starts, during which he was 4-2 with a 1.37 ERA. Included in that span was a scoreless six-inning outing in a 5-0 win over Cleveland on July 14th. He is now 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA in his career versus the Indians. Gray has shut down some of Cleveland’s top hitters including Edwin Encarnacion (5-for-21), Carlos Santana (2-for-18), Lindor (2-for-12) and Jose Ramirez (2-for-12).

Kluber will look to rebound from one of his worst starts of the year, giving up four runs in a no-decision at the Chicago White Sox. He struck out 12 in the game and has 161 in 114 innings this season. Kluber has been pretty good in his career against the Bronx Bombers, posting a 1.91 ERA in five career starts against them and has owned New York newcomer Todd Frazier (2-for-23, nine strikeouts).

This should be a great pitching matchup and I expect a low-scoring game here. I’m giving the edge to the Indians as their bats woke up on Tuesday by scoring 10 runs at Fenway despite losing. I can’t see Judge breaking out of his slump against Kluber. Cleveland has won 10 of their last 11 at Progressive Field and I think they take the opener. This game won’t be the only big event going on in the state of Ohio – The Hall of Fame Game will kick-off the NFL season at 8:00 ET.

Pick: Indians -155
