Two teams who struggle to stop anyone on the defensive end will meet up in Charlotte Tuesday night as the Hornets host the Washington Wizards. Neither team is in great position in the Eastern Conference standings right now, but if they can start playing some defense, maybe that can change. Charlotte allows an average of 113.1 points per game, while ranking 28th out of 30 NBA teams in defensive field goal percentage at 48.8 percent. The Hornets are currently 1-3 on their five-game homestand and two of those losses came against sub-.500 teams including their most recent setback – a 122-107 blowout to the Atlanta Hawks. Charlotte led by two at halftime, but allowed the Hawks to score 71 second half points to drop to 5-8 at home and 6-7 ATS. The Wizards defense is in a lot worse shape right now, allowing a league-high 122.5 points a contest, but the offense is ranked third at 118.2 a game. Washington is allowing an average of 127 points while dropping five of the last six games including a 135-119 home loss to the L.A. Clippers on Sunday in which they surrendered at least 30 points in every quarter. The total for this game is obviously very high – 231 – after it opened at 235.5. Bradley Beal recorded 30 points and 12 assists as the Wizards beat Charlotte 125-118 at home back on Nov. 22. The home team is 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS in the last six meetings.

Beal had 20 points in the loss on Sunday, but was 5-of-18 from the field, as the Wizards shot 45.5 percent, but just couldn’t stop the Clippers from scoring at will. The top two scorers on Sunday came from the bench in Troy Brown, Jr. (22 points) and Davis Bertans (25), who combined shot 16-of-25 from the field and 8-of-16 from 3-point range. Washington has held an opponent under 100 points just twice this season and the last one was Nov. 4 against Detroit (99 points). Veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas (calf) sat out his third straight game on Sunday and isn’t likely to play Tuesday. The Wizards will continue their three-game road trip in Memphis on Saturday.

Power forward PJ Washington, who averages 12.1 points a game as a rookie, made 12-of-13 free throws Sunday before leaving with an ankle injury but is probable for Tuesday’s contest. Starting guards Devonte’ Graham and Terry Rozier combined for just 20 points on 7-of-30 shooting after recording 111 points in the two previous contests against Golden State and Brooklyn. Small forward Miles Bridges scored 20 points and went 3-of-3 from 3-point land, but was a -15 in the box score. The Hornets will be in Brooklyn tomorrow night to begin a three-game road trip.

This could be an exciting high-scoring game, and if it is, the advantage goes to Charlotte at home. The Wizards can’t stop anyone right now and are 3-9 away from home.
