The Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers will play their fourth series together this season when they meet in the opener of a three-game weekend set a Comerica Park in Detroit. The White Sox and Tigers both in the hunt in the mediocre American League Central despite sub-par seasons thus far. The Cleveland Indians lead the division with just a 28-24 record followed closely by Minnesota. The Tigers, who play 12 of their next 15 games at home, are coming off a 4-7 road trip and are look for back-to-back wins for the first time since May 18th. Detroit took two of three at Kansas City earlier this week to wrap-up the trip after dropping three of four against the White Sox last weekend. The Tigers are 22nd in the league in batting average and don’t have a regular hitting over .270. Pitching has also been poor as they rank 27th in ERA (4.77). Chicago wrapped up a seven-game homestand with consecutive losses to Boston and now opens a 10-game road trip that will include stops at Tampa Bay and first place Cleveland. White Sox RF Avisail Garcia is 12-for-34 with a homer and seven RBIs versus the Tigers this year while Chicago has taken six of the first nine games of the season series.

Pitchers: White Sox – Derek Holland (4-4, 2.37 ERA) | Tigers – Michael Fulmer (5-3, 2.65)

Derek Holland, who will make his third start against Detroit this season, was a loser against the Tigers last Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out a season-high eight batters over six innings. He received a no-decision at Detroit on April 29th, allowing two runs over 6.1 solid innings of work. Miguel Cabrera is 4-for-11 with a pair of homers against Holland.

Michael Fulmer has been terrific this season, throwing 10 straight quality starts. He has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts, but he has lost his last two after the Tigers failed to score a run each. Fulmer went the distance in a 3-0 loss to the White Sox last weekend and had a no-decision against them after throwing six innings of three-run ball in April. Chicago first baseman Jose Abreu is 5-for-11 with a homer off Fulmer in his career.

If Fulmer keeps this up, he could be in the running for Cy Young – at the very least an All-Star appearance. Detroit will be glad to be home after a long road trip and look for their bats to chase Holland.
