The two teams that represented the Western Conference in last Spring’s league semifinals, are off to rough starts for their standards, as the Golden State Warriors visit the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night. The Spurs, who were swept in the Western Conference finals by the Warriors last spring, have dropped three straight after a 4-0 start. The Spurs won their first four behind power forward LaMarcus Aldridge but the absence of Kawhi Leonard (quad) and Tony Parker (quad) is starting to be noticed as the team averaged 91.7 points in the three losses. Leonard, who was knocked out of the Western Conference finals in Game 1 when he sprained an ankle after landing on the foot of Golden State center Zaza Pachulia, has yet to play this season and there is no timetable for his return. The Warriors have dropped three of their first seven, but are coming off their best effort to date in a 141-113 trouncing at the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The Spurs took two of the three regular-season meetings in 2016-17, but Golden State earned a 110-98 win in its last trip to San Antonio on March 29th.

Golden State dropped two of their first three then broke-off a three-game winning streak. Things regressed in their next contest when they turned the ball over 26 times in a 115-107 home loss to the Detroit Pistons. The Warriors, who committed at least 16 turnovers in each of their first seven games, cut that number down to a season-low 12 against the Clippers. Superstar Steph Curry is 8-of-11 from the free-throw line in the last two games after hitting all 50 of his attempts in the first six games. The Warriors are in the middle of a three-game road trip that takes them to Denver on Saturday before returning home for four straight.

San Antonio needs to find some scoring to help out Aldridge and may have found one in rookie shooting guard Brandon Paul, who came off the bench on Monday and delivered a season-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 30 minutes. Paul did not get off the bench in the first two games and totaled 18 points in the next four before getting more playing time in the loss to the Celtics. Kyle Anderson is starting in Leonard’s spot at small forward and is averaging 7.9 points on 42.3% shooting after going 2-of-8 from the floor against Boston. Small forward Rudy Gay needs to get going after averaging 8.7 points on 9-of-26 shooting over the last three games.

BUFFALO BILLS VS NEW YORK JETS PREDICTION

Golden State got off to a slow start last season also, then look what happened. They were terrific against a good Clippers team last time out and will get a Spurs team that is not the same without Leonard. I’ll take the road favorite.
