The San Antonio Spurs will look to show more intensity and passion when they take the court for Game 3 of the Western Conference finals with the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night after being humiliated in Game 2. Playing without their star forward Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs looked like a lost puppy dog from the outset of Game 2 and were blown out 136-100 to go down two games in the series. “It looked pretty collective to me. I don’t think it was one guy who didn’t believe and he infected everybody else or anything like that. As a group they just let themselves down,” coach Greg Popovich said. “We need to get slapped and come back and play Game 3 and see who we are.” Jonathan Simmons scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half as the lone bright spot for the Spurs. Simmons started in Leonard’s place and made 6-of-9 shots to begin the game while the rest of the Spurs were 3-for-22. Leonard is the only player in the series to make the All-NBA first team that was announced on Thursday, but sat out two of the last three playoff games due to left ankle issues and did not do any on-court work while reporters were at the San Antonio practice facility on Thursday. If Leonard is limited or unable to go, the Spurs will need more from LaMarcus Aldridge, who managed eight points on 4-of-11 shooting in Game 2.

The Warriors set the tone early in Game 2 after coming out sluggish in the opener. Steve Kerr, who is still not coaching from the sidelines, delivered a message for his team before the game that they need to play with urgency from the opening tip. That’s exactly what Golden State did on Tuesday. Stephen Curry had 29 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in three quarters to help the Warriors hold home court for the series. The 36-point Warriors win is second in a playoff game to the 1948 Philadelphia team when they beat St. Louis by 39. The Golden State bench contributed a season-best 63 points despite still not having the injured Andre Iguodala. The Warriors had 39 assists – the most by any team this postseason – including 30 on their initial 38 baskets. Shaun Livingston scored in double-figures for the first time this postseason with 10 points. Klay Thompson, still struggling to find his shooting touch, had 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Kevin Durant and Curry were both named to the All-NBA second team on Thursday while forward Draymond Green was a third-team selection. Golden State is now a perfect 10-0 this postseason.

I definitely see the Spurs playing with more passion in Game 3 in front of their home fans, but will it be enough? Probably not. Even if Leonard plays, the Warriors should win this game. The Spurs are pretty good at home and have covered 19 of the last 28 meetings with the Warriors at AT&T Center. I’ll take the points and hope for a competitive game.

Pick: Spurs +6
