Utah State (1-0) at Utah (1-0)
When: Friday, September 11th, 2015
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
Time: 9:00 ET
The battle for the state of Utah takes place tonight in Salt Lake City as the Utes host the Aggies of Utah State. The Utes might suffer a bit of a letdown after last week’s huge win over Big Ten’s Michigan Wolverines 24-17. Quarterback Travis Wilson led the way by going 24-for-33 for 208 yards and another 53 on the ground including a touchdown. Utah held Michigan to only 119 total yards in the first half and intercepted Michigan QB Jake Rudock 3 times in the game. Utah has now won 8 consecutive season openers. These teams didn’t play last year, but did in 2013 when both of tonight’s quarterbacks started. Wilson threw for 302 yards in a hard-fought 30-26 win.
Utah State really struggled last week beating Southern Utah 12-9. They were a miserable 1-for-15 on 3rd downs and only had 250 yards of total offense. Chuckie Keeton was only 16-for-33 for 110 yards and an interception. They were down 9-5 with under 5:00 left when Andrew Rodriguez returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown to take the lead. Running back Lajuan Hunt ran for 80 yards on 23 carries. The bright spot was the defense. They held Southern Utah to 163 yards of total offense which was 8th best in the Nation last week. The Thunderbirds were even worse than the Aggies on 3rd down going 1-for-18. Utah State will need a much better offensive game if they want to beat Utah.
I’m going to attribute last week’s lack-luster effort by Utah State as a result of their opponent and looking ahead to this game. They are much better than they played against Southern Utah. I think they have enough fire-power on offense to keep up with the Utes and keep it close.
Pick: Utah State +13.5
