Tigers vs Cardinals Preview and Free Pick – May 17th, 2015 ]]> include($base_url . “/includes/header.htm”); ?>
The Detroit Tigers try and pull off a three game sweep of the Cardinals tonight in St. Louis. After the Tigers 4-3 extra inning win yesterday over the Cardinals and the Royals loss to the Yankees last night, Detroit is now tied for 1st in the American League Central. The Tigers have won 4 out of 5 and Miguel Cabrera is heating up again. He now has 4 home runs in the last 3 games. Detroit is now 2nd in the majors with a .283 team batting average.
Alfredo Simon takes the mound tonight making his 8th start. He is 4-1 and leads all Tiger starters with a 3.05 ERA. He is coming off a hard luck no decision to Minnesota in which he pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing only 1 run. He was 2-0 in three starts against St. Louis last year while he was pitching for Cincinnati.
The Cardinals still have a 3-game lead over the Cubs in the National League Central despite losing 5 of their last 7. They also still lead the majors with a 2.92 team ERA. This will only be the second series loss for the Cardinals this year.
Tonight’s starter Lance Lynn has had an up and down season so far. He is 7th in the National League with 51 strikeouts and has only given up two home runs. Five of his starts have been great, but two have been terrible. The Cubs hit him for 5 runs in 6 innings on May 6th and the Brewers tagged him for 6 runs in 5 innings back on April 26th. His only start against the Tigers didn’t go so well back in 2012. He was hit for 5 runs in 5 innings in a 6-3 loss.
The Cards haven’t been swept at home in a 3-game series since June 2013 against the Rangers. Lance Lynn has been pretty solid for the Cards this year and I believe he will put a stop to this current losing streak.
Pick: Cardinals -1.5 +150
