The Texas Rangers will hit the road for the first time this season when they visit the Angels of Anaheim on Tuesday night to begin a three-game mid-week set. Rangers pitching was blasted back at home to Cleveland and Oakland, but regrouped for an 8-1 win over the A’s on Sunday to take two of three to end the homestand. Texas has been swinging the bats, however, and young Joey Gallo is on a tear. Gallo has two home runs, seven RBIs, three walks and nine strikeouts while playing third base in place of Adrian Beltre, who has been out with a tight right calf muscle but could return as soon as this week. When Beltre gets back, the Rangers could have Gallo share time in left field with Ryan Rua and Jurickson Profar or send him to Triple-A Round Rock to get regular at-bats. The Angels are off to a nice 5-2 start and scored seven runs in the ninth inning Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners. Slugger Albert Pujols hit his first homer of the season yesterday, but is only batting .207, while Mike Trout has two bombs and is slugging .680. As a team, the Angels are hitting .291, good for second in the majors.

Pitchers: Rangers – Cole Hamels (0-0, 4.50 ERA) | Angels – Tyler Skaggs (0-1, 8.44)

Cole Hamels will make his second start of the year after receiving a no-decision in his season debut against Cleveland last Wednesday. Hamels was not his best, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings. The former Phillie led the AL with 10 road victories last season and has gone 22-6 over 45 regular season starts since joining the Rangers in 2015. Hamels is 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA in five career starts against Los Angeles, including 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two outings at Angel Stadium.

Tyler Skaggs was hit hard in his first start, taking the loss last Thursday at Oakland after allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts across 5.1 innings. Skaggs made 10 starts for the Angels last season after missing the entire 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery. Skaggs pitched six scoreless innings against Texas on September 9th and owns a 2-1 record and 5.49 ERA in four career starts against the Rangers.

Right now, both teams are hitting the ball well and both pitchers had sub-par outings in their openers. Look for Hamels to let up a couple of homers and for Texas to hit Skaggs. I like the over in this one.
