The PGA Tour is starting to find its groove after two successful and entertaining events. This week’s event is actually the first tournament to start on its original date since the March 12 Players Championship. The Travelers Championship usually has a pretty weak field as it takes place right after the U.S. Open, which has been moved to Sept. 17-20 due to COVID-19.
This will be another strong field when golfers take to the TPC River Highlands on Thursday morning. The course in Cromwell, Connecticut is a par 70 at 6,841 yards and one of the easier courses on the Tour. The PGA Tour record single-round score of 58 was shot in this event by Jim Furyk in the final round of the 2016 tournament. Oddly enough, Furyk didn’t even win the event (Russell Knox). The 72-hole event record is 258 by Kenny Perry in 2009.
Bovada Sportsbook has listed three players as +1200 favorites – Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy was the favorite in the first two events since the PGA’s return but finished 41st and 32nd respectively. Thomas has been Top 10 in both tournaments since the restart and his best result here is third.
Webb Simpson won the RBC Heritage on Sunday to edge out Abraham Ancer by one stroke. Simpson last played in this event in 2018 and missed the cut. He is listed at +2000 this week. Defending champion is Chez Reavie is a longshot at +12500.
