Padres vs Mariners Preview and Free Pick – May 12th, 2015 ]]> include($base_url . “/includes/header.htm”); ?>
The Seattle Mariners continue their 9-game home stand tonight against their Spring Training roommates the San Diego Padres. The Mariners just swept the Oakland A’s over the weekend to creep closer to the .500 mark and are only 5.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West. Nelson Cruz has continued his torrid start and looks like a legitimate MVP candidate.
Tonight’s starter James Paxton had a terrible start to the season, but has since turned it around. In his last 2 starts Paxton has pitched 14 innings and only allowed 2 runs in each of those starts. Both of those were road starts and now he gets to pitch in a pitcher’s friendly ballpark in Safeco Field.
The Padres were a dark-horse pick this season to win the National League West and have been playing well in a tough division. They are currently in 2nd place just 3.5 games behind the Dodgers. After splitting a 4-game series in Arizona over the weekend, the Padres wrap up their 9-game road trip with these two games in Seattle. Justin Upton has provided much needed power in San Diego this season with a team leading 8 HR and 24 RBI.
Ian Kennedy is tonight’s starter and just like Paxton, Kennedy started off terribly, but his last 2 outings have been better. He’s 2-0 in his last two starts with a 2.07 ERA, 11 strikeouts and only 2 walks. This will be his first career regular season start against Seattle.
The Mariners are hot, but people are underestimating this Padres squad. It appears that Ian Kennedy has gotten back on track and I like them in this spot.
Pick: Padres +119
