If you’re one of many College Basketball fans who don’t start paying attention until March, did you know that the North Carolina Tar Heels are in last place in the ACC? Yes, look it up here. It has been a horrible season for the team from Tobacco Road and the only way they can play in the middle of March is if they win the conference tournament. North Carolina looks to snap a five-game losing streak when they visit South Bend, Indiana and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Monday night. The Irish sit in the middle of the pack of the Atlantic Coast Conference at 6-8 and are currently not even listed as one of only four ACC teams in the NCAA Tournament according to ESPN. So, a loss to lowly North Carolina would probably mean that Notre Dame would need to run the table the rest of the way. The Irish have 15 wins and have six games left in the regular season, five against teams tied or below them in the league standings. Notre Dame is coming off an embarrassing 34 point loss at No. 7 Duke on Saturday. The Irish, who are 3.5-point favorites, have lost to the Tar Heels seven straight times.

If there’s one thing the Tar Heels can hang their hat on this season is rebounding margin in which they are first in the ACC in rebounds per game (42.9), but are last in 3-point shooting accuracy (28.7 percent). Guard Cole Anthony leads the squad in points (19.3) and had 17 in Carolina’s 64-62 home loss to Virginia on Saturday. Junior forward Garrison Brooks averages 14.9 and tops the team in rebounding (8.6). The Tar Heels shot 50 percent from the floor in the loss to the Cavaliers, but received zero points from their bench in a combined 29 minutes. North Carolina will be at Louisville on Saturday.

Senior center Juwan Durham was one of just two double-digit scorers on Saturday when he led the team with a career-high 21 points, while fellow senior John Mooney had 19 points and nine boards. Senior guard TJ Gibbs (13.2 points) did not score against Duke and is just 2-for-18 from the field the last two games. Sophomore point guard Prentiss Hubb leads the team with 4.6 assists per contest, but is shooting only 26 percent from the floor over the last six games. The Irish will host Miami next Sunday.
