Viejas Arena is one of the toughest venues in all of College Basketball and it will be the backdrop on Wednesday night when the sixth-ranked Nevada Wolf Pack visit the San Diego State Aztecs. Nevada has been cruising all season with only one loss, but still own just a 1.5-game lead in the Mountain West Conference over both Utah State and Fresno State. The Aztecs are next at 8-4 in conference play, but have been on a roll of late, winning six of their last seven games overall and 12 straight conference games at Viejas Arena. This has also been designated as a “blackout” game, giving the fans and players even more motivation. San Diego State is the only conference school with a winning record against Nevada since Eric Musselman took over at head coach four years ago, recording a 5-2 mark including two in a row at Viejas Arena, and also has defeated the Wolf Pack twice in the last three years in the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas. Nevada has won 10 straight games by an average of 22 points since suffering its lone loss of the season at New Mexico on January 5th and are coming off an 82-49 blowout win at Wyoming on Saturday. Nevada is 0-5 at Viejas Arena since moving to the Mountain West in 2012, while the Aztecs are 79-11 in conference home games over the last 11 seasons.

Reigning Mountain West Player of the Year Caleb Martin is the scoring leader (19.0) for a Nevada team that is tied with the 2010-11 San Diego State squad for the best record after 25 games (25-1). Caleb Martin finished with just 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting, including 0-for-9 from 3-point range, in the last meeting with the Aztecs, a 90-73 loss in the semifinals of the MWC Tournament. Senior forward Jordan Caroline is averaging 18.8 points to go with 9.8 rebounds per game, while guard Jazz Johnson (11.3 points) and senior point guard Cody Martin (11.1) also contribute double figures. Cody Martin also leads the conference in assists at 5.4 per game.

Potential first round NBA pick Jalen McDaniels leads the Aztecs in scoring (17.2), rebounding (8.6) and steals (1.3) with Devin Watson right behind at 16.4 points and is shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. Sophomore forward Matt Mitchell (10.5) also averages in double figures. Watson scored 19 points and McDaniels 18 (seven rebounds and three steals) in the 71-65 home win over Boise State last time out and enter Wednesday three games behind the Wolf Pack. San Diego State’s next game will be at UNLV on Saturday.

San Diego State has won 3 of the last 4 meetings with Nevada.

We know Nevada is not only the best team in the MWC, but one of the best teams in the country and should win this game, but the Aztecs are awfully good at home and the crowd will be jacked for this. This is a ton of points to give San Diego State at home.
