That Washington Nationals are riding their pitching staff towards the top of the National League East standings and will continue their three-game Beltway Series with the struggling Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Washington took the opener 6-0 on the strength of 7.2 scoreless innings from lefty Gio Gonzalez, while Anthony Rendon stayed hot to lift that Nationals to within a half-game of the Atlanta Braves in the division. Rendon blasted a three-run homer and Washington held their opponent to three runs or less for the sixth time in the last seven games. Bryce Harper went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the win and owns 12 strikeouts in the last five games, but Rendon homered in back-to-back games and cleanup hitter Matt Adams is up to nine home runs in May. Washington will get one of their best offensive weapons back soon in second baseman Daniel Murphy, who homered and drove in six runs in a rehab game with Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday. The Orioles are seeking some offense and have scored three or fewer runs in 11 of their last 13 games while dropping into the American League East basement at 17-37. Designated hitter Mark Trumbo (knee) returned from a five-game absence on Monday, but went 0-for-2 with a walk. Baltimore will try their luck against righty Jeremy Hellickson on Tuesday while the Orioles go with Dylan Bundy.

Pitchers: Nationals – Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.13 ERA) | Orioles – Dylan Bundy (3-6, 4.45)

Hellickson should know this Orioles lineup well considering he started 10 games with the team in the last half of 2017 before signing with Washington in the offseason. Hellickson has been on a roll of late, feeding off the hot Nationals staff, and has allowed one or no runs in each of his last four outings. However, he only completed six innings in one of those turns, which marked his lone win in the span. Hellickson is 4-4 with a 5.80 ERA in 14 career games at Camden Yards.

Bundy is coming off a dominant performance against the last-place Chicago White Sox on Thursday, allowing two hits, three runs, and striking out 14 in the complete game win. Bundy struggled a bit from the end of April through the beginning of this month, but has wins in two of his last three starts. He won his lone previous career start against Washington, scattering two runs over six innings in August of 2016, though he did surrender a home run to the currently red hot Rendon.

Don’t look much into Bundy’s last outing against the lowly White Sox. He’s struggled for the most part of the season, while Hellickson has found the form that made him a highly regarded prospect. Give me a hot Nationals team even money against a team 20 games under .500, and I’ll take it every time.
