The Mets and Chicago Cubs got the weekend underway Friday afternoon with a tight contest that saw one of New York’s young phenoms step up and deliver a couple of big blows. The teams will continue their four-game set with an afternoon tilt at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon as New York sends out right Zack Wheeler to oppose Chicago lefty Jose Quintana. Second-year player Jeff McNeil continued to swing a hot bat for the Mets when he launched a two-run homer and the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning of New York’s 5-4 victory on Friday. The win was just the second in six games for a Mets team that just won’t go away. McNeil is 9-for-18 with two home runs, four RBI and six runs scored during a four-game hitting streak, while teammate Michael Conforto blasted his 15th homer of the season. New York closer Edwin Diaz picked up the save Friday with a perfect ninth after giving up eight runs in 6.2 innings over his previous six appearances. The Cubs dropped to 2-2 on their current 10-game homestand and received a two-run homer from Addison Russell and saw first baseman Anthony Rizzo extend his hitting streak to nine games with a single in four at-bats.

Pitchers: Mets – Zack Wheeler (5-5, 4.94 ERA) | Cubs – Jose Quintana (4-6, 3.87)

Wheeler has been involved in some high-scoring games lately – partly his doing – with the over going 6-1-1 in his last eight starts. He’s been hit hard the last two outings to the tune of 20 hits, 14 runs – nine earned – and three homers allowed in blowout losses to the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves. Wheeler has not allowed less than three runs in each of his last seven starts and owns a 5.55 ERA away from home. The Mets are 1-3 in his four career starts against the Cubs including a loss last June in which Wheeler allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings of work.

Quintana has pitched better than Wheeler, but the Cubs have not given much run support. Chicago is just 1-7 in Quintana’s last eight starts and have scored four runs or less in all of them. He is coming off a no-decision last Sunday at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in which he gave up two runs in five innings. Quintana owns a 1.35 ERA in three career starts against New York including six scoreless innings last May at Citi Field.

The Cubs just aren’t hitting right now and their lack of offense when Quintana starts is alarming for me when trying to back them. The Mets hit very well against lefties – .342 last 10 games – and should be able to get to Quintana here. I’ll take a shot with the underdog.
