With a phenomenal freshman class and a few transfers, the Memphis Tigers are a legitimate threat come March and they’re off to a hot start with two easy wins. Their first true test comes Tuesday night on the road against the 14th-ranked Oregon Ducks from a neutral site venue in Portland – home of the NBA’s Trail Blazers – as part of the Phil Knight Invitational. One of those freshman, James Wiseman, is the nation’s top recruit and is in a little bit of trouble off the court. Wiseman has received a temporary injunction against an NCAA ineligibility ruling for improper payments and is expected to play. The NCAA alleges that coach Penny Hardaway helped pay for the Wiseman family’s move from Nashville to Memphis in the summer of 2017 while he was a high school coach and considered a booster for the Tigers. Wiseman averaged 22.5 points on 15-of-18 shooting, 10 rebounds and four blocks over the first two games against South Carolina State and Illinois Chicago. Oregon lost a lot in the offseason, but did grab an impactful grad transfer from New Mexico in Anthony Mathis to work alongside good buddy Payton Pritchard. The Ducks knocked off Fresno State by 14 to open the season and throttled Boise State 106-75 on Saturday while shooting 70 percent from the field. Oregon State takes on Oklahoma in the nightcap.

Memphis had everything going for them in Saturday’s 92-46 win over Illinois-Chicago, shooting 59.3 percent from the field – 14-of-27 from 3-point range – while holding the Flames to 24.2 percent shooting. Freshman guard Boogie Ellis scored 22 and is averaging 15 while freshman forward Precious Achiuwa has totaled 24 points along with 15 rebounds in the first two games. Sophomore guards Alex Lomax and Tyler Harris are the only returning players from a year ago, and have contributed 16.5 points between them. Another highly regarded freshman, Damion Baugh, has a team-leading 12 assists in the first two games and has turned the ball over just three times. Memphis will host Alcorn State on Saturday.

The Ducks got off to a sluggish start shooting the ball against Fresno State, going 1-for-13 from beyond the arc before scorching the Broncos for 13-of-19 on Saturday. Mathis led the way with 30 points against Boise while knocking down 9-of-11 from three-point range, while junior college transfer Chris Duarte has averaged 11.5 points thus far. Pritchard is averaging 21.5 points, seven assists, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the first two games, while senior forward Shakur Juiston has totaled 21 points and 10 assists. Sophomore forward Francis Okoro is questionable for Tuesday after being struck by a car. He recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in the season opening win over Fresno State. The Ducks will host Texas-Arlington on Sunday.

This Memphis team is way too talented for Oregon to handle right now. I’m actually surprised the Ducks are ranked this high early in the season. The Tigers defense will be suffocating and won’t allow Oregon to get good looks from beyond the arc.
