The Xavier Musketeers will play their sixth-straight home game on Tuesday night, and they will hope for a much easier victory than last time out, as they come in heavy favorites against the Marshall Thundering Herd. Eighth-ranked Xavier put forth a horrible effort for most of its encounter with East Tennessee State, who led by as many as 22 points with 14:24 remaining in the second half before watching the Musketeers storm back, overcoming their worst shooting performance of the season on Saturday. Trevon Bluiett, who missed 11 straight shots at one point, drained the go-ahead bucket with 6.3 seconds remaining in the game. It was Xavier’s largest home comeback in 18 years, and they will play two more games before starting Big East play after Christmas. The Herd have won four games in a row after a 99-96 overtime victory over Ohio, but are just 1-3 on the road. Marshall has allowed their opponents to shoot 41.3% from long range – the eighth-worst mark in the country.

The Thundering Herd are ninth in the country, averaging 90.2 points a contest and the majority of the scoring is done by three players. Jon Elmore leads all of Conference USA in scoring at 24.3 points per game while teammates C.J. Burks (19.6) and Ajdin Penava (19.1) rank third and fourth, respectively. Together, they are the highest scoring trio in the nation at 63 points per game. Elmore also dishes-out a conference-high 7.5 assists and shoots 82.6% from the free-throw line, while Penava leads the conference in rebounding (9.9 and field-goal percentage (65.2). Marshall will be home to Eastern Kentucky on Thursday before beginning conference action next week.

Bluiett averages a conference third-best 21.4 points-per-game, and he’s still shooting better than 50 percent from the field for the season despite a 7-for-22 performance against the Buccaneers. Bluiett has made three or more 3-pointers in each of his last four games. J.P. Macura contributes 11.4 points per games but is coming off his worst showing of the season, missing all eight of his field goal attempts while settling for one point in 21 minutes on Saturday. Kaiser Gates (9.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg) was 2-for-7 against East Tennessee State. Xavier is the ninth-best free-throw shooting team in the country at 79.0%.

NCAA BASKETBALL SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS

Xavier received a wake-up call on Saturday and should have a better showing this time around. It still won’t be enough to cover this massive spread against a team that can score. I’ll take the points.
