The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions will look to get their struggling offenses in gear when they conclude Week 9 of the NFL schedule on Monday Night Football. The Packers lost future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Rodgers to a broken collarbone on October 15th against Minnesota, and the offense hasn’t been the same since. Brett Hundley took over against the Vikings and promptly threw three interceptions in the 23-10 loss, snapping Green Bay’s three-game winning streak. Hundley answered that performance by completing just 12-of-25 passes for 87 yards and an interception in his first career start – a 26-17 loss to New Orleans on October 22nd. The Packers are coming off a bye week, and coach Mike McCarthy and Rodgers are working with Hundley to improve on the team’s 243.5-yard total offense in the near-two games since Rodgers was injured – 66.5 below their season average. Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 423 yards in last Sunday’s 20-15 loss to Pittsburgh, but his team went 0-for-5 in the red zone and fell to 28th in the league in that category as it settled for five field goals by Matt Prater. This is the first meeting this season between the clubs, with the second one coming in the season-finale on New Year’s Eve in Detroit.
Golden Tate has recorded seven receptions in back-to-back games now, while Marvin Jones Jr. made six catches for the third consecutive contest, amassing 128 yards in the process. The ground game is still a mess, which is one of the reasons Detroit can’t seem to cash-in once it gets into the redzone. The Lions have now gone 59 straight games without a 100-yard rusher, with the last coming when Reggie Bush accomplished the feat in 2013 against Green Bay. Stafford actually has averaged a team-best 5.2 yards per carry this season while Ameer Abdullah leads in attempts (101) and yards (369) for the Lions, who rank 28th in rushing yards per game (82.1) and yards per attempt (3.48). Detroit’s 10 interceptions and 16 overall takeaways rank third-best in the league.

Hundley should benefit from the bye week and his interactions with Rodgers. “Me and Aaron talk a lot,” Hundley told reporters on Thursday. “Even when he was playing, we still talked a lot.” Hundley needs to figure out how to get his weapons back in the game. Jordy Nelson is tied for second in the NFL with six receiving touchdowns, but he was limited to just one catch for 13 yards against the Saints while Randall Cobb has caught just five passes for 43 yards over the last two games. The lack of offense the last two weeks has been putting a lot more pressure on the defense, which now ranks 23rd in total yards (348.9), and 27th against the run (125.7). Cornerback Damarious Randall has picked-off a pass in three straight contests. The Packers will travel to Chicago next week for a date with the Bears.
Everyone is writing this Green Bay team off, which should give them extra motivation. I’m confident that Hundley will have a solid game tonight after the bye week. Green Bay’s defense will force a few Stafford mistakes, and the Packers come away victorious.
