The Cleveland Indians who were one of the preseason favorites to get to the World Series are starting to play like it now. They got off to a horrendous start, but have really turned it around winning 11 of their last 14 overall. Carlos Carrasco shut down the potent Kansas City offense last night 2-1. He allowed the 1 run in 7 innings and four relievers did the rest. The Tribe are now only 1 game below .500 and are just 5 1/2 games behind the Twins in the A.L. Central.

One of the reason’s for the Indians’ early troubles and now recent success is ace Corey Kluber. He did not look like a Cy Young winner in his first 7 starts. On May 7th, the Royals tagged him for 5 runs in 5 innings in a 7-4 loss. That was his 4th loss in a row at that point. Since then, he has been brilliant. Check out these numbers in his last 4 starts: 3-0, 32 innings pitched, 1.40 ERA, and 50 strikeouts.

The Royals are starting to go in the opposite direction. After last night’s defeat they have lost 6 of 7 and have fallen out of first place in the A.L. Central. Their great offense has been anything but recently. They scored 8 runs in the one game they won last week in Wrigley Field, but the other 6 losses they have scored a combined 7 runs. They still rank 1st in the majors in batting average (.275) and 4th in runs scored (4.59/game), so there’s still potential to break out in a big way.

Jason Vargas takes the mound for the Royals tonight. He’ll be making his 7th start this year and he really hasn’t been good. He’s 3-2 with a 5.16 ERA and has allowed a home run in 5 of his 6 starts. He’s actually faced Cleveland twice already this year winning both decisions, but not reaching the 7th inning in either game.

Even though Vargas has beaten the Indians twice, the Tribe are a different team and so is Cluber. I really like the Indians in this one. Take the runline.
