Opening Odds: Los Angeles -150/7

The San Diego Padres will get their first chance to prove they belong in the NL West conversation this season when they host the division-favored Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game series beginning Friday night at Petco Park. San Diego wrapped-up a 4-3 road trip with the most runs and hits in a game this season in an 11-2 romp over the Atlanta Braves Thursday. The Padres recorded 17 hits in the contest as seven players had two hits or more. Wil Myers broke-out of an 0-for-16 skid with a homer and three RBIs against the Braves as the Padres stayed within 1.5 games of the first place Dodgers entering the weekend. The series opener will not be easy for San Diego going up against Clayton Kershaw, who owns an 18-6 record and a 1.90 ERA in 34 career starts against the Padres while holding them to a collective .188 batting average. The Dodgers lost some steam off a four-game winning streak by dropping two of three in San Francisco this week, but that didn’t stop the league from honoring Cody Bellinger as the NL Player of the Month. Bellinger leads all of MLB in batting average (.425) and RBIs (38) and is tied with Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich for the home run lead at 14. Bellinger is hitting .302 with seven homers, eight doubles and 23 RBIs in 33 career games against the Padres.

Pitchers: Dodgers – Clayton Kershaw (1-0, 2.25 ERA) | Padres – Eric Lauer (2-3, 4.41)

Kershaw will make his fourth start after missing the first part of the season recovering from a shoulder ailment and has been getting stronger in each start. The 31-year-old lefty threw over 100 pitches (101) for the first time since last August versus San Diego in picking up the win last time out against Pittsburgh, holding the Pirates to one run and four hits over seven innings while recording eight strikeouts. Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer, who was 3-for-4 yesterday, is 5-for-15 with one homer versus Kershaw.

Eric Lauer has yet to throw more than 94 pitches in his six starts, nor has he recorded more than six innings, and is coming off a no-decision last time out versus Washington. The lefty allowed two earned runs and recorded six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of an 8-3 win over the Nationals. He is winless over his last three outings despite having 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings during the span. Lauer was brilliant last season against the Dodgers, however, going 3-0 with an 0.92 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in three starts.

The Dodgers won the 2018 season series 14-5.

Padres fans have been looking forward to this first matchup with the Dodgers, but I’m sure they’ll be plenty of L.A. fans in Petco as well. Kershaw’s dominance of San Diego in his career is no small sample size – its real. Yes, the Padres exploded on Thursday, but they are still one of the worst offenses in the league, ranking 25th in runs (3.72) and 27th in batting average (.225). I’ll lay the run and a half with Kershaw.
