There are only a few weeks left in this long baseball season and oddly enough, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds will battle for the first time this season and will play each other six times between now and next weekend. First up is Friday night at Great American Ballpark as the red-hot D’backs look to keep climbing up the wild card standings, while the Reds look to play spoiler once again. Cincinnati won the final two of a four-game set this week with wild card-contending Philadelphia, dropping the Phillies behind Arizona in the race to catch the Chicago Cubs. Eugenio Suarez went deep for the seventh time in his last 11 games and Phillip Ervin hit the walk-off home run in the 11th inning to help give the Reds just their third win in the last nine contests. Arizona was off on Thursday but swept the San Diego Padres in three games and have won nine of their last 10. The Diamondbacks will conclude their six-game road trip next week at the New York Mets before playing 12 of their final 15 games at home.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Robbie Ray (12-7, 3.97 ERA) | Reds – Tyler Mahle (2-10, 4.72)

Arizona is 8-2 in Ray’s last 10 starts including a 6-5 win over the Dodgers on Saturday despite the lefty not at his best. Ray allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings after five shutout innings at Milwaukee in his previous outing. He is 1-2 with a 4.09 ERA in four career appearances with Cincinnati.

Mahle worked himself back to Triple-A Louisville in July after a horrendous stretch but came back with a solid outing at St. Louis on Sunday, limiting the Cardinals to one earned run on two hits in 6.1 innings of a no-decision. The Reds went on to lose that game 4-3 making it the eighth setback in Mahle’s last nine starts dating back to the end of May. He will get his first crack at the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Ray has been terrific in his last three road starts, allowing two runs or less against tough opponents – Brewers, Rockies, Dodgers – and should have no trouble with the Reds on Friday. Look for Arizona to continue their quest for a wild card spot.
