Opening Odds: Chicago -114/11.5

Balls where flying over the fence all around Major League Baseball on Monday and the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies joined the fun at Coors Field, connecting for three apiece as Colorado came away with a 6-5 win in the series opener. The middle game will be played Tuesday with the Rockies aiming for their 10th consecutive home victory, as they move up the NL Wild Card standings. The Rockies, who got homers from Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon and Ian Desmond, are now 2.5 games out of the second wild card spot. Colorado erased a 4-0 deficit for their 11th win in 15 games overall and dropped the Cubs back into second place behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. Chicago, who received dingers from Anthony Rizzo, David Bote and Kyle Schwarber, have now lost six of their last seven road games. Third baseman Kris Bryant walked and scored twice, but hasn’t hit the ball out of the yard in his last 11 games. Veteran lefty Jose Quintana will pitch for the Cubs Tuesday against rookie Peter Lambert.

Pitchers: Cubs – Jose Quintana (4-5, 3.77 ERA) | Rockies – Peter Lambert (1-0, 1.29)

Quintana will make his second start in a row against the Rockies, who beat him at Wrigley Field last Thursday. Quintana allowed three runs and six hits over 7.1 innings and suffered his fifth loss of the season. The lefty is 0-4 with a 4.19 ERA over his last six starts and the Cubs have won just one game in that stretch. Quintana is undefeated in three starts at Coors Field with an ERA of 4.58 ERA.

The Cubs and Rockies have split the first four meetings of 2019.

Lambert made his major league debut last week at Wrigley Field against Quintana and outpitched the veteran to earn his first victory. Lambert gave up just one run and four hits over seven innings, striking out nine batters and walking one. He was 2-2 with a 5.07 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A Albuquerque prior to his recall – a league known for hitting.

I’m not going against Colorado at home right now. I know Lambert is a rookie, but he did beat Quintana last week in Chicago and the Cubs have not been good on the road recently. I’ll take a shot with Lambert and the Rockies as a small dog to win their 10th straight home game.
