Cubs vs Brewers Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [9/5/18]

Chicago (81-57) at Milwaukee (79-61)
When: Wednesday, September 5th 2018
Where: Miller Park,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Time: 8:10 ET | TV: WGN, FS Wisconsin
Opening Odds: Milwaukee -125/9

If the Milwaukee Brewers want any shot at dethroning the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, they knew they had to start by sweeping this week’s three-game series. Well, two down and one to go. After squeaking out a 4-3 on Labor Day, the Brewers used 10 hits and three Cubs’ errors to rout Chicago 11-1 to pull within three games of first place. Milwaukee, who has won three in a row overall, has the top NL Wild Card spot, 1.5 games ahead of St. Louis, and three games clear of the L.A. Dodgers. Brewers left fielder Christian Yelich, who is making a push to be considered NL MVP, has reached base in 21 consecutive games – the longest current streak in the National League. Chicago still leads the season series 9-6, but the Brewers have won five of the last six matchups. Milwaukee is just 29-31 in their own division and 40-23 against the rest of the NL. The Cubs have lost back-to-back games for the first time since dropping three straight from August 18-21. First baseman Anthony Rizzo left Tuesday’s game with a bruised foot, but X-rays were negative and he is day-to-day.

Pitchers: Cubs – Jose Quintana (11-9, 4.21 ERA) | Brewers – Jhoulys Chacin (14-5, 3.53)

Lefty Jose Quintana has delivered some of his best outings recently, posting a 2.25 ERA over his last three starts, but is still having a disappointing year. Quintana limited Philadelphia to one run and three hits over six innings in a no-decision Friday, striking out seven and walking one. He is 4-2 with a 1.67 ERA in eight career starts against Milwaukee.

Jhoulys Chacin will go for a career-best 15th victory on Wednesday and is coming off his 14th at Washington last time, allowing one run in 6.1 innings of work. Chacin’s streak of quality starts has reached five, including one against the Cubs on August 14th in which he had a season-high 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. He is 4-4 with a 2.84 ERA in nine games (eight starts) against Chicago.

Milwaukee is building confidence with each win over Chicago and will look for the sweep Wednesday. Both pitchers have been good against the other team, but Chacin has been more consistent throughout the whole season. Look for Milwaukee to keep the bats going and sweep the Cubs.

Pick: Brewers -110
