This Thursday Night Football game between the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears is not very appealing – unless you are fan of either team. Two struggling offenses square-off from Solider Field at 8:15 ET on Amazon Prime (subscription only). The Commanders were supposed to compete for the NFC East crown, but find themselves way behind after a disappointing 1-4 start. Considering the Eagles are 5-0 and both the Cowboys and Giants are 4-1, this may be a lost season in D.C. After a 28-22 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1, the Commanders have dropped four-straight and have scored only 35 points total in the last three. Washington had a chance to beat Tennessee last week, but Carson Wentz through an interception in the end zone late in the game to seal it.

Meanwhile, the Bears are not doing much better. Their offense is ranked right behind Washington in scoring at 17.2 points a game and are just 2-3. Chicago had a 22-21 lead late in the game against Minnesota last week, but lost 27-22 and are now 0-3 on the road. The Bears opened the season with a surprising 19-10 home win over the San Francisco 49ers and also have a 23-20 victory over the Houston Texans at Soldier Field. The teams last met in 2019 with Chicago winning 31-15 at Washington. The quarterbacks in that one were Mitch Trubisky and Case Keenum. Washington is 21-16 against the Bears all-time, including 9-8 in Chicago. The road team is 8-2 against the spread in the past 10 meetings.

A lot of the fans in Washington want Carson Wentz pulled as the starting quarterback, but he did have a decent overall game despite a key mistake late. Wentz threw for 359 yards and two TDs and an interception on third-and-goal at the Tennessee 2 with six seconds left. Washington has started six quarterbacks in Coach Ron Rivera’s two-plus seasons. Rookie running back Brian Robinson made his NFL debut six weeks after being shot twice in a Washington D.C.-area carjacking. He finished with nine carries for 22 yards. Rookie receiver Jahan Dotson missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury and is not expected for this one. Dyami Brown (105 receiving yards, two touchdowns) and Terry McLaurin (76 yards) were Wentz’s favorite targets last week.

Despite the loss, Chicago fans should be please with Justin Fields’ effort. Fields easily had his best game of the season in completing 15-of-21 for 208 yards with a TD and also rushed for 47 yards. He had a 52-yard TD run called back by penalty. The receiving corps is not good for the Bears, but will get former Patriots N’Keal Harry back on Thursday. He suffered an ankle injury during training camp that required surgery. The Bears got the former first-round pick in July for a 2024 seventh-round pick. Top cornerback Jaylon Johnson has missed the past three games due to injury but likely will play Thursday. The defense ranks ninth against the pass, but a dismal 31st against the run (170 yards per game). Chicago will play at New England next Monday night.

I’m picking the Commanders (+1) on our staff selections page, but I think the better play is the Under. Yes, it’s a low total, but these offenses rank near the bottom of the league and the defenses aren’t terrible. The Under has cashed in 15 of the last 18 Washington games in October, while the Bears are 10-2 to the Under in October. The Under is also 21-8 in Chicago’s last 29 home games.
