The Golden State Warriors are hoping the long All-Star Break layoff will have them re-energized for the second half of the season, and they get things started by hosting the surging Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night. Four of Golden State’s starters did not get much of a break as Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green competed in the All-Star festivities in Los Angeles on Sunday, but at least they didn’t have to travel far. The Warriors dropped four of their eight games before the break to fall a half-game behind the conference-leading Houston Rockets while the Clippers come out a half-game behind the New Orleans Pelicans for the No. 8 spot with 26 games left in the regular season. Los Angeles has won seven of their last nine, including three of the first four on a seven-game trip that continues Thursday in Oakland. Los Angeles snapped a 12-game losing streak in the series with a 125-106 win at Golden State on January 10th when Lou Williams scored a career-best 50 points.

One of the All-Star snubs might have been Clippers’ center DeAndre Jordan, who ranks second in the NBA in both rebounding (15) and field-goal percentage (65.2), but helped his team with a career-high 30 points in a win at Boston heading into the break. Small forward Tobias Harris, acquired from the Detroit Pistons in the Blake Griffin trade, is averaging 17.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in six games with Los Angeles. Small forward Danilo Gallinari is averaging 20.1 points in seven games since returning from a glute injury. L.A. will visit last place Phoenix tomorrow night before ending the road trip next Tuesday in Denver.

Golden State has covered the spread in 6 of the last 8 meetings.

Durant ended up on the opposite side from his three teammates with the new format in the All-Star Game and prevented Curry from attempting a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds. Durant, who scored 50 points in a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers heading into the break, scored 19 points for the winning Team LeBron – the highest scoring total of any of the four Warriors in the game. Golden State gets right back into the playoff run with a pair of games against Western Conference playoff contenders coming out of the break before a three-game East coast trip.

I expect the Clippers to come out of the break with a little more energy than Golden State. The Clippers have actually been on a pretty good ATS run and seem to be better without Griffin. They handled the Warriors last month in Oakland – I think they keep it close.
