The Western Conference playoff race is getting really interesting and promises to be exciting as we enter the home stretch of the 2017-18 NBA season. Fourth through 10th place in the overall standings are separated by just 3.5 games, and the Los Angeles Clippers sit currently in the ninth spot – one game behind eighth place Utah. The Clippers will visit the No. 3 seed Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night in hopes of continuing their hot play and surge up the standings. The Clippers will got for their fourth consecutive victory and will also try and split the four-game season series with Portland, winning the last time they entered the Moda Center, but losing both at Staples Center. The Clippers used an 18-0 run in the fourth quarter to get past the Phoenix Suns in a 111-99 win on Wednesday and spent the night and have been doing a lot of scoreboard watching. Portland ran off a 13-game winning streak recently that included win No. 13 at the Clippers on March 18th, but have since lost three of their past five contests, including a shocking 108-103 setback at the lowly Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

Los Angeles’ remaining schedule is kind of a glass half-full, half-empty situation. They only have one more road game after Friday, but six of their final seven games will be against teams with winning records. Center DeAndre Jordan is having a terrific month, averaging 17.3 rebounds while shooting 64.1% from the floor in March. Tobias Harris, acquired from the Detroit Pistons at the end of January, scored a team-high 27 points in the win over Phoenix and has scored 18 or more in five straight contests. L.A. will host the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

Portland has covered the spread in 3 of the last 4 meetings with the Clippers.

Two of Portland’s victories in their last five games have been impressive – road wins over Oklahoma City and New Orleans – before losing to the second-worse team in the West. CJ McCollum did all he could with 42 points on 16-of-25 shooting, while All-Star point guard Damian Lillard missed the game following the birth of his child. Lillard is expected back in the lineup on Friday for the key game against Los Angeles. Backup point guard Wade Baldwin IV made his second appearance of the season on Wednesday and scored 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

The Clippers are really making a run at the playoffs and are playing well right now. I just don’t think they have enough to beat a Blazers team who smoked the Clippers 12 days ago. Portland is also coming off that embarrassing loss and will be focused tonight.
