Cardinals vs Mariners Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [7/3/19]

St Louis (41-42) at Seattle (38-51)
When: Wednesday, July 3rd, 2019
Where: T-Mobile Park,
Seattle, Washington
Time: 10:10 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: St Louis -145/9

The St. Louis Cardinals can be either thankful or kicking themselves based on their standing in the National League Central. They continue to be just 3.5 games out of first place despite losing six of their last seven contests because Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs have been trading places atop the division. The Cardinals will try and get back on track after dropping the opener of a three-game interleague set at the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday as Adam Wainwright takes the mound against Mike Leake. St. Louis scored its runs in the opener on two solo homers by Jose Martinez and a two-run blast by Yairo Munoz that tied the game in the seventh inning. Veteran catcher Yadier Molina was hitless in four at-bats on Tuesday and hasn’t homered in his last 29 games. Tim Beckham launched a pinch-hit, tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning to help Seattle snap a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory. The Mariners’ 13-2 start to the season is a thing of the past as they prepare to gather some momentum in the second half of the season and into 2020.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (5-7, 4.35 ERA) | Mariners – Mike Leake (7-7, 4.63)

Wainwright was a tough-luck loser last time out thanks to the cold Cardinals’ bats in a 2-0 home loss to Oakland last Wednesday. The veteran righty allowed two runs – both on solo homers – and seven hits while striking out nine in 6.2 innings. Wainwright is 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA in two career starts against Mariners – both at home.

The Mariners have won four of Leake’s last six starts but the last two were not his best. He allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings at Milwaukee after surrendering right runs and 11 hits in his previous outing against Baltimore. Leake, a former Cardinal, is 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA in 17 career appearances (16 starts) against them and this be his first as a Mariner.

The Cardinals are really scuffling right now and they’re at their worst on the road where they’ve dropped three of their last four and stand at 17-24 away from Busch Stadium on the season. Look for Leake to get back on track after a couple of rough outings and lead Seattle to a rare two-game winning streak.
