Cardinals vs Brewers Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [8/26/19]

St Louis (71-58) at Milwaukee (67-63)
When: Monday, August 26, 2019
Where: Miller Park,
Milwaukee, WI
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: Milwaukee -120/10

The streaky St. Louis Cardinals have certainly had their way within their own division and they’ll get a chance to extend their lead when they visit another NL Central rival in the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. St. Louis completed a seven-game homestand by taking two of three from the Brewers then sweeping the Colorado Rockies in four games after Sunday’s 11-4 thumping to increase their lead over the Chicago Cubs to 2.5 games. The lead is 4.5 over Milwaukee as St. Louis has won 14 of their last 17 overall and are 18-6 against division foes since the All-Star Break, when they were a 44-44 team. The Cardinals’ 5-3 rain-shortened loss to the Brewers in the series finale last week was their only loss on the homestand and first since August 17th against the Cincinnati Reds. Milwaukee followed the Cardinals’ series last week by taking two of three from Arizona over the weekend, dropping the series finale on Sunday 5-2. Outfielder Christian Yelich stole his 25th base Sunday, becoming the youngest player to record 40 homers and 25 steals in a season since Atlanta’s Chipper Jones in 1999. Veterans Adam Wainwright and Gio Gonzalez will take the mound in Monday’s series opener.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (9-9, 4.51 ERA) | Brewers – Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.64)

Wainwright will face the Brewers for the third time this season and second in less than a week after getting tagged for five runs on eight hits and four walks in the rain-shortened setback last Wednesday. It was the third time in four meetings that St. Louis had lost to Milwaukee when Wainwright starts, after they had won five in a row such meetings dating back to 2015. Wainwright, who is 3-6 with a 6.64 ERA in 12 road starts this season, is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts this season against the Brew Crew.

Gonzalez is winless over his last eight starts and part of that is due to the fact that he can barely reach the five qualified innings to get credit for a victory. Milwaukee is 5-3 in those eight starts including a loss at St. Louis last week in which the lefty allowed one run on three hits and four walks over six innings. Gonzalez is 3-4 with a 3.11 ERA in 11 career starts against St. Louis.

I really don’t have much confidence with either pitcher in this one, but I’ll give the edge to the red-hot Cardinals. They have not only dominated the NL Central, but they’ve won six of the last seven against the Brewers with the only loss coming in a rain-shortened game last week that they were starting to rally in. Wainwright has not been good on the road but has pitched pretty well in Milwaukee over the last few years.
