Opening Odds: Colorado -150/10

The scorching Milwaukee Brewers look to make quick work of the NLDS with the Colorado Rockies when they play Game 3 of their best-of-five series Sunday afternoon at Coors Field. The Brewers, who have won 10 straight games dating back to the regular season, took the first two games at Miller Park thanks to timely hitting and solid pitching. While Colorado pitchers were cautiously working around the top of the lineup, the bottom half came through in Friday’s 4-0 Milwaukee victory, showing how much underrated depth this Brewers team has. Milwaukee also has a shutdown reliever in Josh Hader, who did not allow a baserunner in a combined 1.2 innings over the first two games. Colorado returns home to the friendly confines of Coors Field looking to generate some offense. In the four road games starting with Monday’s tiebreaker at Los Angeles, the Rockies have a combined six runs in four games, but pitching has kept them in all games and their two best starters are on tap for Games 3 and possibly 4. Colorado shortstop Trevor Story is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in the series. The Brewers took three of four in Denver back in May, scoring 23 runs in the victories, and zero in the loss that Freeland started.

Pitchers: Brewers – Wade Miley (5-2, 2.57 ERA) | Rockies – German Marquez (14-11, 3.77)

Wade Miley surrendered two earned runs or less in seven straight starts until laboring through his final two against Pittsburgh and Detroit to end the season. The lefty not record an out in the sixth inning during any of his last four starts and was roughed up for a combined seven runs – six earned – across seven innings over his last two. Miley went up against the Rockies on August 5th and allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over five innings without factoring in the decision.

German Marquez is coming off his best season of his three-year career, going from 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings a year ago, to 10.5 in 2018, finishing with 230 across 196 innings. Marquez allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last 13 starts and surrendered two or fewer in 11 of those. He had one of his worst outings of the season at home against Milwaukee on May 10th, when he allowed five runs on 12 hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings.

The road-weary Rockies are finally home where they really excel (47-34) and are going up against a pitcher (Miley) that is starting to lose his confidence. The Rockies have had their backs against the wall most of the season, and they’ve come through before. I think the bats come alive today and Colorado stays alive.

Pick: Rockies -146
